General elections were held in India from April 19 to June 1, 2024 in seven phases to elect 543 members of the Lok Sabha(Lower House of Parliament). Votes were counted, and the result was declared on June 4 to constitute the 18th Lok Sabha. Simultaneously, elections for legislative assemblies also took place in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim, along with by-elections in 26 constituencies across 13 states.
It was the largest election in
India's history. With a voter eligibility of over 968 million out of a
population of 1.4 billion, representing ∼70% of the total population, this election saw
unprecedented participation, especially by women, with 642 million voters
overall and 312 million women voters—the highest ever.
Approximately 1 million polling stations were established across 543 constituencies, with 15 million polling officials and security personnel deployed for election duty. Over 5.5 million Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were utilized to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process. Nearly 18 million first-time voters registered. Additionally, more than 2,100 General, Police and Expenditure Observers were deployed for the election process. The Election Commission of India (ECI) also offered 27 applications and portals catering to all stakeholders, including cVIGIL application, which enabled citizens to promptly report violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) with assured action within 100 minutes. In keeping with the tradition of Election Commission of India(ECI) to foster a culture of transparency and reiterate its commitment to high standards of electoral practices amidst the democratic nations, ECI organized the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP), 2024 alongside India's Lok Sabha and State Legislative elections. The initiative aimed to enhance transparency and share best electoral practices with foreign Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and organizations.
On May 5, 2024, the ECI hosted its largest-ever global delegation, with 75 delegates from 23 countries observing India's elections. The event was inaugurated in the august presence of CEC Mr. Rajiv Kumar and ECs Mr. Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu at New Delhi. Members from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), and media teams from Bhutan and Israel also participated in the event.
