The Malawi Electoral Commission hosted a public lecture on Saturday, 11 May 2024, at the University of Malawi’s Great Hall jn Zomba, delivered by the Commission's Chairman, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale. Entitled “Unlocking the Power Within Youth for Future Leadership,” the lecture aimed to inspire young people towards responsible citizenship, encouraging them to assume leadership roles within their communities while preparing themselves for larger leadership positions, recognizing that leadership is a gradual journey.
During the lecture, Justice Dr. Kachale emphasized the importance of young people resisting manipulation by politicians for violent and intimidatory actions against perceived opponents. He also addressed questions from participants, responding to their concerns directly.
In anticipation of the 2025 General Election, Dr. Kachale reiterated the importance of citizen participation, urging all eligible individuals to register once the Voter Registration exercise commences in September 2024. Additionally, he took the opportunity to educate both physical and online attendees about the newly enacted electoral laws.
In his remarks on behalf of the University, Professor Happy Kayuni, Executive Dean of the School of Law, Government, and Economics, expressed gratitude to the MEC for choosing the University of Malawi as the venue for the lecture, highlighting the institution’s historical significance as a hub for political activism in the country.
Professor Kayuni urged students and the public to heed the call for active participation in building Malawi's democracy, recognizing the importance of collective efforts in shaping the nation's future. |
