The 12th Executive Board meeting of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) took place on March 20, 2024, in Songdo International Business District (IBD), Incheon, South Korea, the location of the A-WEB Secretariat.
The meeting commenced with a welcome address from the Secretary General (SG). Dr.In-sik Jang, SG of A-WEB, highlighted the achievements resulting from close collaboration among the Secretariat and member Election Management Bodies (EMBs) in the past year. These achievements included organizing international conferences, election observation missions, and publications. Additionally, SG mentioned that the A-WEB Secretariat continues to present best practices and initiatives in election management collected from member organizations.
The Chairperson of A-WEB and the Electoral Commission of South Africa, Mr. Mosotho Moepya, emphasized the global significance of elections, particularly this year, dubbed the ‘Year of Super Elections.’ Moepya stressed that Election Management Bodies bear the responsibility for ensuring free and fair elections. He urged EMBs to cooperate in addressing common challenges related to preparing and conducting elections, stating that A-WEB provides the best platform for sharing electoral expertise and fostering cooperation.
The meeting, attended by A-WEB Office Bearers and representatives of member EMBs from 18 countries, included reports from the A-WEB Secretariat on achievements and future plans, as well as discussions on agenda items such as Charter revisions and the selection of best practices and initiatives in election management. Cases submitted by member EMBs from Hungary, Libya, Myanmar, Paraguay, Peru, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Türkiye were among those discussed.
Furthermore, participants exchanged advanced experiences in combating gender-based political violence and shared collaborative strategies, with a focus on the efforts of the Election Disputes Tribunal (TCE) of Ecuador.
The A-WEB Secretariat, as the host of this meeting, appreciates all participants and anticipates meeting all member EMBs at the upcoming 6th General Assembly meeting, scheduled to be held in Colombia.
