Colombia will hold local elections on October 29, 2023, in which elected governors, deputies, mayors, and councilors of the municipalities. In addition, the councilors will be part of the Local Administrative Boards (JAL). And to provide the necessary guarantees to carry out the election day, by addressing the security and public order alerts in rural territories, the Ministry of the Interior installed the National Commission of Electoral Guarantees (CNGE).
The CNGE comprises the
National Electoral Council (CNE), the National Civil Registry (RNEC), the
Ombudsman's Office, the Attorney General's Office, the Prosecutor General's
Office, and members of military forces. The purpose established for this is to
accompany the upcoming electoral process. Likewise, to follow up on the
National Plan of Electoral Guarantees (Demos Ruta) designed by the National
Government. During the installation,
it emphasized that the National Commission moved to the territories, joining
efforts with the departmental commissions. In this way, there will be a presence
in rural areas to guarantee the effective response of the State if it is
required. Also, it presents the
Immediate Reception Unit for Electoral Transparency (URIEL) platform; a center
that processes complaints from citizens regarding electoral crimes that impede
the proper functioning of the October 29 event. Increasing the accessibility of votes in geographic areas that are difficult to access and guaranteeing the transparency of the elections are other challenges for the National Civil Registry. |
