A-WEB Signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission of the Republic of Kenya to Support Building the Commission's Capacity for Election Management

On
March 30th 2015, the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) signed
Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries
Commission (IEBC) of the Republic of Kenya in Nairobi, promising to cooperate
with the IEBC in building the Commission’s capacity in election management.
With
this signing of MoU, A-WEB will launch its country project in Kenya, primarily
focusing on improving the electoral Information and Communications Technology
by restructuring the existing system and equipping the IEBC staff to become ICT
experts through specialized trainings. A-WEB will also work to provide needed
support in the areas of voter education and enhancement of electoral legal
system in Kenya.
The
MoU signing ceremony was attended by various stakeholders in the election
management and government officials including A-WEB’s Secretary General Mr.
Yong-Hi Kim and Mr. Ahmed Issack Hassan, the IEBC’s Chairperson.
During
his address at the ceremony, Mr. Hassan remarked that the partnership between
the IEBC and A-WEB is the first of its kind that is agreed between the Republic
of Kenya and an Asian country.
Mr.
Kim Yong-Hi, Secretary General of A-WEB, stated that this Memorandum of
Understanding will be a great step towards establishment of sustainable and
mature democracy and will contribute to instigating transparent and reliable
electoral system in Kenya.
He also mentioned that A-WEB will continue to foster international cooperation with the aim of fostering mature democracy throughout the African continent, starting with its successful execution of the country program in Kenya.
