The 2023 International Conference of Asian Electoral Studies


 The 2023 International Conference of Asian Electoral Studies was held in the National Assembly, Seoul, Republic of Korea, on October 28, 2023. The Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) and the Korean Association of Electoral Studies (KAES) co-hosted this event. 

 


 

 The Conference was joined by scholars from three Asian countries: Korea, Taiwan, and Japan; several members of the National Assembly of Korea; and other electoral stakeholders. 

 

 The A-WEB Secretary General, Dr. In-sik Jang, gave an opening speech, saying, “I hope this Conference will be another resounding success as an exemplary model for regional cooperation in the election field.” 

 

 During the conference, the scholars analyzed elections and democracy in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan from various points of view. They showed and shared the characteristics of Asian democracy which is different from Western democracy highlighting the democratic crises and challenges facing Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, and seeking solutions together.

 


 

 

 Assistant Secretary General Dr. Seung Kim presented the Role of the Judiciary in Mediating Electoral Processes and Outcomes in Africa. In his presentation, Dr. Kim shared his observation of global trends in the judicialization of elections and related issues beyond the Asian region and sought ways to cope with the common challenges. 

 

 The Conference has been an excellent opportunity for A-WEB to strengthen its cooperation with important electoral stakeholders such as academic and political circles.

 

 The papers under the theme Electoral Politics and Democracy of East Asia in a Turbulent Era, presented at the 2023 International Conference of Asian Electoral Studies, have been published on the official website of A-WEB at the link below:
