On 12 April 2022, a trilateral meeting among the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Secretary General of A-WEB was convened at the national office of the Electoral Commission of South Africa in Pretoria.

The meeting was arranged thanks to the proposal by Shri Sushil Chandra, Chief Commissioner of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Chairperson of A-WEB. As the Electoral Commission of South Africa prepares for the 5th General Assembly (GA) Meeting, this meeting was held to discuss ideas for the further advancement of A-WEB.

Mr. Glen Mashinini, Vice Chairperson of A-WEB and Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of South Africa, welcomed the delegations and shared the path South Africa has taken towards electoral democracy in the past thirty years. Shri Sushil Chandra elaborated on the ECI’s commitment to A-WEB. He also presented ideas for the further advancement of A-WEB, saying that through A-WEB, Election Management Bodies (EMBs) the world over could learn from each other and work together to consolidate democracy in their countries. Mr. Jonghyun Choe, Secretary General of A-WEB, emphasized that A-WEB is above all a valuable network for EMBs, and serves as a forum or channel for the exchange of expertise and experience among EMBs. He added that A-WEB is also an umbrella under which EMBs with advanced election management skills could help other EMBs which need to further develop their election management systems.
