On 18 January, the election for the office of President of the Republic was held in Portugal.
The President of the Republic is the foremost figure of the Portuguese
State, representing the Portuguese Republic and safeguarding national
independence, the unity of the State, and the proper functioning of democratic
institutions. The President also serves as Supreme Commander of the Armed
Forces.
Those entitled to vote in the presidential election are Portuguese
citizens aged 18 or over, residing either in Portugal or abroad, provided they
are duly registered on the Portuguese electoral roll.
Out of a total of more than 11 million registered electors,
approximately 9 million and 260 thousand are registered in national territory,
and more than 1 million and 750 thousand abroad.
The voting rights of Portuguese citizens residing abroad are exercised in person at polling stations established for this purpose at Portuguese diplomatic representations.
In accordance with the provisions set out in the Constitution of the
Portuguese Republic, should no candidate obtain more than half of the validly
cast votes, a second round is held 21 days later, in which the two candidates
receiving the highest number of votes in the first-round stand for election.
As none of the 11 candidates standing on 18 January secured the required
majority, the second round of the presidential election took place on 8
February, with the two most voted candidates from the first ballot submitted to
a further vote.
Lastly, a table is presented below with the data relating to electoral
participation in both rounds of the election of the President of the Republic,
as recorded in the minutes of the General Counting Assembly.
