The Malawi Electoral Commission has taken a significant step toward enhancing the transparency and efficiency of election administration with the development of a new Electoral Processes Monitoring and Reporting Strategy, which was validated on 12 February 2026.

Opening the
meeting in Lilongwe, Chief Elections Officer, Andrew Mpesi said the strategy
will provide a structured and institutional framework to enable the Commission
to systematically monitor and report on all electoral activities.
The Chief
Elections Officer acknowledged that while MEC has previously carried out
various monitoring and reporting activities, these were often not guided by a
single harmonised strategy. The new framework therefore seeks to bring
consistency, clarity of roles, and standardised tools across all electoral
processes.
Mpesi also revealed that the development of the strategy faced delays due to the Commission’s heavy engagement in the management of the 2025 General Election, which demanded full attention and resources. Despite the challenges, he said, the Commission remained committed to completing the assignment.
He expressed
profound gratitude to the African Union (AU) and the Common Market for Eastern
and Southern Africa (COMESA) for providing financial support towards the
development of the strategy, noting that the funding enabled MEC to engage a
consultant from Zambia, Peter Peter Mwanangombe, and conduct stakeholder
consultations leading to the development of the strategy.
Mr Mpesi urged
participants at the validation meeting to engage openly and constructively,
emphasising that validation is not merely a formality but a critical
opportunity to review the strategy and ensure it is practical and responsive to
the Commission’s needs.
The workshop has brought together MEC management, staff, and representatives from various stakeholder organisations. |
