[The Republic of Korea] National Election Commission Convenes Strategic Meeting for the Management of the 9th Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections
Last updated 2026-01-27

On January 21, the National Election Commission, hereinafter NEC, convened a meeting on the 2026 Principal Work Plan, attended by standing commissioners and directors general from the 17 Si/Do (metropolitan/provincial) Election Commissions. The session was dedicated to deliberating on priority management strategies for the 9th Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections (9th Local Elections), scheduled for June 3. The contents of the meeting are as follows.

The 9th Local Elections: Procedural Management Grounded in Fundamental Principles

The NEC plans to establish an optimized electoral management framework, encompassing personnel and facilities, tailored to the environment of the 9th Local Elections. The Commission will ensure stable election management by strengthening field-oriented practical training for polling and counting staff and bolstering the security of election information systems.

Furthermore, the NEC intends to enhance election transparency and public integrity by expanding the 'Fair Election Monitoring Task Force' to a nationwide scale. This will be supported by ensuring the participation of party-recommended commissioners and observers throughout all electoral procedures, as well as implementing manual verification (hand-counting) during the ballot counting process.

Rigorous Measures Against Major Electoral Offences, Including Illegal Political Funds

While the NEC will focus on guiding permitted activities to maximize the guarantee of political expression, it will simultaneously operate regional investigation teams to take rigorous action against major electoral offences. These include the receipt of illegal political funds related to candidate nominations, acts of donation or bribery, and the unlawful interference of public officials in elections.

In response to the dissemination of malicious false information, slander, and offences utilizing deepfake technology, the Commission will respond decisively by operating the 'Special Response Team for False Information and Slander' and actively utilizing deepfake detection programs. Additionally, to enhance the objectivity and integrity of election-related opinion polls, the NEC will conduct thorough deliberations and monitoring, while strictly punishing serious illegal acts such as the distortion of poll results.
