MEC Shines at PRSM 2025 Awards

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has once again cemented its reputation for outstanding communication leadership after being named the winner of the Excellence in Public Sector Communication Award at the 2025 Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) Awards. The ceremony took place on Saturday, 1 November 2025, at a colourful gala dinner held in Mzuzu.

Adding to the Commission’s success, its Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, retained the Public Sector PR Practitioner of the Year title — an award he also won in 2024. This year, Mwafulirwa went a step further by being crowned the Overall PR Practitioner of the Year, the highest individual honour bestowed by PRSM.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mwafulirwa said the recognition was a reflection of the Commission’s collective commitment to transparency and open communication. “This award is not about me as an individual — it is about the Malawi Electoral Commission’s belief in proactive, consistent, and honest engagement with the public,” he said. “It reaffirms that good communication is central to building trust in democratic institutions.”

He added that the awards would inspire MEC to continue upholding high standards of professionalism in public communication. “As a Commission, we are motivated to keep improving how we communicate — ensuring that every Malawian remains informed, included, and confident in the electoral process,” he emphasized.

The PRSM Awards celebrate excellence and innovation in communication across sectors, recognizing individuals and institutions that have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of public relations practice in Malawi.

The full list of winners at the 2025 PRSM Awards is as follows:

1.    Excellence in Public Sector Communication: Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)

2.   Excellence in Corporate Information: FDH Bank

3.   Excellence in Development Communication: European Union (EU) in Malawi

4.   PR Practitioner of the Year (Corporate Sector): Akossa Hiwa – National Bank of Malawi

5.   PR Practitioner of the Year (Public Sector): Sangwani Mwafulirwa – Malawi Electoral Commission

6.   PR Practitioner of the Year (Development Sector): Blessings Phumisa – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

7.   Public Relations Society Honorary Fellow of the Year: Alaudin Osman

8.   Overall PR Practitioner of the Year: Sangwani Mwafulirwa – Malawi Electoral Commission

Through these recognitions, MEC continues to demonstrate that effective communication is not only about disseminating information but also about strengthening democracy, fostering public trust, and promoting accountability in governance.
