The 2nd Phase of the Use of Media in Election Management, a course of the 2021 Election Management Capacity Building Program was held from 13 to 22 October 2021.
As the influence of the media in elections is growing, 27 election officials of election management bodies from Mongolia, Cameroon, Suriname, Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritius, Albania, and Romania took part in the course and shared their experiences.
The second part of the course enabled participants to discuss the process of media monitoring and complaints about the issues identified in the media; to think about the responsibilities of media oversight bodies; and to deal with issues of administrative penalties and sanctions against violations of media regulations.
The training was carried out through a series of lectures, discussions, and practical work. As part of its activities, participants developed media guidelines for fair coverage of elections and had a chance to present them.
Ms. Chianese who moderated the presentation session of the guidelines thanked all participants for their active engagement, saying “the media guidelines that each team presented were well developed within the context of their countries”.
The Training Team of the A-WEB Secretariat hopes the course has provided help to all participants in their effort to explore ways to effectively respond to current media-related issues by sharing each country’s systems and practices on media monitoring for fair election coverage, regulations, and training for journalists. |
