The National Civil Registry of Colombia (RNEC) hosted a two-day virtual forum titled “Building the Democracy of the 21st Century” from 24 to 25 June 2021.
The Colombian Congress recently approved a bill on a new electoral code which will take effect from the coming Youth Council elections in November 2021 and the Presidential and Legislative Elections in 2022. With the purpose of sharing the new electoral bill, the RNEC organized an international forum, inviting renowned regional experts to discuss issues such as the recent electoral reforms in Latin America and the role of international election observation.
The A-WEB Secretariat was invited to share its experiences in organizing election observation missions and its current activities. Panelists were invited from various organizations including the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIHR), and the Organization of American States (OAS). During the discussion, the panelists shared experiences on the challenges observation missions face and the role they play in reinforcing public trust in the electoral processes and the election results.
Hoping to strengthen the exchange of knowledge and experiences among its 118 member organizations, the A-WEB Secretariat will continue to participate in events hosted by its member organizations as well as organize virtual webinars.
