Last updated 2019-12-10

The Fijian Elections Office, who is currently an executive board member of A-WEB, hosted the Inaugural Meeting of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Members’ Election Management Bodies Conference from November 12 to 14.

A-WEB’s Director Jinchul Song and Deputy Directors Jinju Jo and Junwoo Park were invited to observe this conference at the Fijian Elections Office headquarters in Suva, which placed its focus on the theme of “Pathways for Strengthening the Governance of Electoral Processes in Melanesia.” The purpose of this inaugural meeting was to bring together the heads of the EMBs from the Melanesian region to initiate discussions to enhance collaboration with the aim of delivering elections in compliance with internationally accepted norms and standards.

During each session, EMB representatives and election experts from various international organizations gave presentations and engaged in panel discussions on various topics such as “Electoral Systems in Melanesia,” “Standards of Free and Fair Elections,” and “The Role of the Secretariat and Partners.”

A-WEB Deputy Director Jinju Jo contributed to the discussion on “Partnership and Stakeholders Talanoa,” with the aim of identifying ways for EMBs to collaborate and strengthen electoral processes within countries and within the broader sub-region.

Throughout the conference, A-WEB representatives also had the chance to visit with the MSG Secretariat to talk through ways the two organizations can collaborate to support the EMBs to strengthen their capacities in election management.
